Im conflicted about this topic and I feel it can be nuanced because while I agree that many fans of vtubers absolutely need a reality check and need to start treating them like real people and not dancing monkeys, there is something to be said about what exactly a vtuber is and what they provide to their audience as entertainers. I think they should absolutely be able to decide if and how much personal information they share with their audience, but I would be a little uncomfortable if I joined as a fan that solely enjoyed the fun and fictional persona of a vtuber, and then suddenly now I know a bunch of random info about a stranger, like what they look like or their actual name. Idk, I think it’s fair for a vtuber to want to be as real as they want with their audience, but I also think its fair for fans to want that “immersion” if certain vtubers only want to present themselves as a character and not have any of their personal information known. One example I can give is that I used to be a fan of a certain asmr vtuber, we’ll call him todd, who primarily made rp audios of a bunch of fictional characters/scenarios. But eventually he decided to do a face/name reveal, and now I just cant watch any of his content anymore without feeling weird about it. It’s like I’m not listening to an audio about a vampire anymore, and instead I’m just listening to some guy named todd in nebraska…its just weird and I had to stop watching him because that separation between art/artist was too broken for me to enjoy whatever rp story he’d do. It’s not that im saying vtubers cant do that if they want to, just that if they start their career as a certain persona and are vehemently against ever sharing personal info, and then suddenly start posting selfies and dropping their actual name it can be odd for the long time fans that just wanted a persona and not a regular youtuber/influencer.

I actually did try out being a streamer for a bit, but it was while my mental health was still in really bad shape So I ended up losing the motivation to do it after a few months My dad (I also come from an Asian household) seemed relatively fine with it, as long as I refrained from showing much of the house (I primarily just played games on streams) My dad later talked to me about how he doesn’t understand younger people thinking they can make money off of content creating, as it’s not really good for making money unless you’re good at it I don’t really think my opinion matters all that much, but I do know an actual career that I want to start working towards, but streaming, for me, was mostly just something I wanted to try out I generally have a lot of social anxiety, but regardless of if anyone was watching my streams or not, it started allowing me to become more comfortable talking to strangers I’m still working on my social skills, but at least now I’m actually able to pick up my food orders and ask staff members for help; I hadn’t been able to do that for 15-16 years

From what I know about idol culture in Asia, there’s a strict set of limitations imposed on the idols so that they can remain “pure” in the eyes of their fans who would rather treat them as objects of desire than as actual people, so it’s not that surprising to see that kind of behavior carried over to the VTuber industry.

Unfortunately when you have a platform and lots of people know you, you're going to be criticized no matter what you do. At the end of the day the only happiness that matters is yours Sho. You should do whatever you're comfortable with. I think most of us are giddy and happy with your face reveals and we'll support you no matter what.
